Position Summary
The City of Cushing is accepting applications for a Laborer in the Water–Sewer Maintenance Division. This position performs manual labor, equipment operation, and maintenance tasks related to the municipal water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
This is an essential position that supports the City’s utility operations and requires reliability, physical stamina, and the ability to work in all weather conditions.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of water lines, valves, meters, hydrants, and sewer mains.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, and light equipment.
- Locate water/sewer lines and assist with emergency repairs, including after-hours work as needed.
- Maintain equipment, tools, and vehicles in safe working conditions.
- Follow all safety procedures and city policies.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Valid Oklahoma driver’s license: CDL or ability to obtain CDL within 6 months.
- Ability to obtain a Class “D” Oklahoma Water Maintenance License and a Class “D” Sewer Maintenance License within 6 months of hire date.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, including lifting 50+ pounds, bending, digging, and working in confined spaces.
- Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions.
- Must pass required pre-employment background checks and drug/alcohol testing in compliance with Oklahoma law and municipal policy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in water/sewer utility maintenance or public works.
- Knowledge of basic pipe repair, utility safety procedures, and operation of light equipment.
- Ability to respond to emergency call-outs.
Work Conditions
- Regular schedule Mon-Fr 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, with on-call rotations as needed.
- Exposure to dirt, water, sewage, noisy equipment, traffic, and outdoor elements.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required.
Compensation & Benefits
- Starting pay: $17.75 with increase when Water and Sewer Maintenance licenses are obtained and when CDL license is obtained.
